What are file containers

In FreeCommander a file container is a file, that contains links to many other files and/or folders. A file container can be opened in a panel (tab) like a folder. Example: all favorite pictures (separately stored in individual folders) can be shown, as if they would be stored in one folder, the file container.

Attention

The edit functions of the main menu item "File" for a file container item always are applied to the original item additionally.

Examples

"File → Delete" does not only remove the item from the file container, but additionally deletes the original item.

"File → Move" does not only remove the item from the file container, but additionally moves it from its original path to the path in the inactive file panel.

Create new file containers

Activating the main menu item "View → New file container tab", or the menu item "New file container tab" in the context menu of the tab area, creates a new file container tab, that holds a new temporary file container.

The temporary file container can be stored with the menu item "Save container to file" in the context menu of the tab area.

Where file containers are stored can be defined in the main menu item "Tools → Settings → View → Folder tabs" in the tab "File container tab". There can be defined also if all temporary file containers should be saved or removed on program end.

A file container can also be created in the search dialog. The search results can be exported to a file container in order to carry out further operations with found files / folders.

Add new items

With the main menu items "File → Copy" and "File → Copy with dialog"
All selected items are copied.
With the menu item "Add items to container" in the context menu of the tab area
Activating these menu items (if a file container is active) adds all items of a another file container (selected in the standard dialog "Open") to the active file container.
With Drag&Drop operation
With copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V)

Delete items

With the main menu item "File → Delete"
Deletes all items selected in a file container from the file container and from the original path.
With the menu item "Add items to container" in the context menu of the tab area
Activating the menu item (if a file container is active) deletes all selected file container items from this container. They remain unchanged in the original path.

Open focused

If one of the main menu items "Folder → Open focused" is activated and an item is focused in the active file container, the original folder of this item is opened.
