How to rename a file or folder?

After activating the main menu item “File → Rename” or the “F2” key the item (file or folder) highlighted in the active panel can be renamed.

If more than one item is selected on calling this function, the function “File → Multi rename…” is called automatically.

When I try to rename a file, which is in use, the new name is lost, and I have to type it again, how to avoid this?

Go to main menu item “Tools → Settings (F12) → File/folder operations → Rename/Create” and activate the option “Use dialog window for rename”. If this setting is checked and the menu item “File → Rename” or the hotkey “F2” are activated, a dialog window pops up for renaming the highlighted item and the new name will be preserve, so you can close the file in use, and then finish file rename operation in FreeCommander.

How to rename multiple files and/or folders?

After activating the main menu item “File → Multi rename…” or the shortcut “Ctrl+M” the “Multi rename” window is opened, where the items (files and/or folders) selected in the active panel can be renamed.

Is it possible to rename multiple files and/or folders from different locations?

Yes, you can use Plain view (Ctrl+B), or File container, to display the files/folders from different locations, then select the items you want to rename and press F2 or Ctrl+M.
Note:  If you want to use the Counter, use option “Reset per folder”, if you want it to start from the same number (1) in each folder.

I have renamed items using “Multi rename” by mistake. Can I undo this operation?

FreeCommander has an integrated undo feature for Multi rename, if you want to undo the last operation, open the Multi rename window (Ctrl+M), go to window menu Command and select “Undo” option.

I’d like to rename the images by EXIF date taken. Is it possible?

Yes, it is, just add the text [exif_taken] into the “File name:” field (or add this item using the button next to the “File name:” field → Picture – EXIF → “Date taken” option).

I’d like to rename the mp3 files by the entries in the ID3 tag. How to do it?

You can use the button next to the “File name:” field → “MP3” sub-options.
