Thumbnail creation

#1 Post by DirkDiggler » 10.02.2026, 13:58

I am using Build 940 64-bit donor version.

I have a fairly large number of directories that contain images. If I access one of those directories using FreeCommander, and the directory has NOT previously been accessed using Windows File Explorer, thumbnails of the underlying images do not appear. Instead, the standard .jpg placeholder icon appears. If I then access that directory using Windows File Explorer (WFE), WFE will create the thumbnails, and when I subsequently refresh the directory in FreeCommander the thumbnails appear as they should.

So, it seems as if FreeCommander is not triggering the OS to create the thumbnails if they have not already been created by Windows File Explorer.

Is there any sort of option or setting I can trigger in FreeCommander to have it create the thumbnails without having to first open the directory in WFE?

Thanks!

I cannot reproduce this, at least not on Windows 11.
Have you tried with default settings?

Marek,

Thanks for checking. I just tested with default settings and issue persists. Must be something specific to my PC setup.

Perhaps it's related with this issue:

832 - Thumbnails are not loading - FreeCommander Forum

I had that strange issue several times with Windows 10. It was always fixed itself after few days.

Perhaps you could try:
- start FC as admin (just for testing)
- 64-bit portable version, unpack it to other drive, or at least not to OS - C:\ root, not to Program Files or Program Files (x86)
- 32-bit portable version, e.g. to D:\Programs\FreeCommander, or C:\Programs\FreeCommander

Once I had that similar issue with thumbnails loading, it was not working in 64-bit version, but it was working in 32-bit (both portable).

Of course, it could be another issue.
