Finally got around to playing with beta again, last time for me was Dec 2010.
This is FreeCommander XE build 595 that I am trying out on Windows 7.0 64bit.
Much progress, feels way nicer than when i last looked at the beta.
It feels good enough from the last few hours that I think I may be jumping to the beta for most of my activity very soon if not immediately.
Some things I discovered which i think are very useful and I was pleasantly surprised to find.
1. You can switch off drag and drop...
Its amazing how easy it is in a file list to drag and drop a folder my accident then oops you wonder what happend a bit later....
2. Rename FreeCommander.exe to say fcx.exe and it uses the programs new name for its profile configuration folder.
I think this is a good idea, easy to make a special case freecommander configuration.
I was surprised by the behaviour as I thought I had lost the config i was tinkering with.
I noticed the files inside the folder also got the name of the program name which is probably more than needed for the beahviour I found useful.
3. The addition of history to the quick filter with a little dropdown is great, think ill be using that a bit.
4. If you change a folder there is an option to automatically deactivate the quick filter. Brilliant.
Some things I find strange.
5. By default it resizes the name column in file list.
I found it quite fiddly to get rid of this behaviour, I had to create a Column Profile then go to the named custom column properties and untick the 'Autosize for "Name" column' and then I had to apply that column profile to my columns. Seemed a lot of work, at least It appears its something you do once on configuration though.
6. Still find it strange it closes all not locked tabs by default.
Overall it is looking great and feels generally very solid.
Most of my ideas and questions are relatively small and minor things compared to the overall behaviour and features available in my opinon.
I havent followed the forum much at all in the last year, so I apologise if I have raised points that might have been discussed and discarded for good reasons in the past.
Yours sincerely,
Robin.

Hi Robin,
please post different questions, issues, or suggestions in separate threads (one topic - one thread).
Forum rules: viewtopic.php?t=9
A discussion about several questions or requests in one thread isn't really helpful for users which use the forum search to solve a problem.

Whether the default setting for any feature is reasonable or strange, of course, depends each user's work style. This one is easy to change. Indeed, one great thing about FC is that it can be customized to suit different styles.rluiten wrote:...6. Still find it strange it closes all not locked tabs by default.
Re: 595 FreeCommand XE greats and odds 595
This one is good, the tabs were not closed in previous versions and I know many users who had several lines of tabs opened just because they didn't know how to disable tabs.rluiten wrote:...6. Still find it strange it closes all not locked tabs by default.
It's always easier to enable the option for advanced user, than disable the option for a beginner.
Re: 595 FreeCommand XE greats and odds 595
The intuitive reason for the default setting (close all tabs except locked tabs) is probably "If I want a tab to stay open, I'll lock it. Otherwise the tab is dispensible." In other words, the logic of locked tabs is what motivates this default setting for closing non-locked tabs.
