Did you try to search in settings? Maybe "view" >>> "hide system files"?

Another way is right-click the status bar on bottom, and select from the pop-up menu.

Myself, I added a button to one of my Favorite Tools custom toolbars to run the FC command --- "Show/Hide hidden and system files". because I toggle it back and forth a lot. Or you can assign a custom hotkey keyboard shortcut.

I think at least system files should be hidden by default, perhaps also files with hidden attribute. It's better for normal users, beginners - and advanced users should know how to enable these files.

In windows Vista:
1. Right Click Start.
2. Select Explore.
3. Select Organize.
4. Select Folder and Search Options.
5. Select the View tab.
6. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
7. Uncheck the Hide extensions for known file types option.
8. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
9. Click yes to confirm that you really want to do this.
10. Click Apply.
11. Click OK.
