Can't create Excel file using context menu "new.."

#1 Post by lobsi » 17.02.2009, 22:15

Hello,

I need some help concerning mouse right click context menu.
If I right click and select "new" I can't create new ms office documents (Excel, Word, Power Point).
Within Explore evrything works fine.

Does anybody know what's wrong?

My system:
XP SP2
MS Office 2002 SP3

Thanks for any help.

Welcome lobsi

First a few questions:
1. What version of FC do you have?
2. Is FC running from a stick/external drive or is it "installed"?
3. Do you get a sub menu under New and if so what options do you have?
4. Are you running under an administrative account or some other account?

Hello clanman,

thanks for reply. Here missing information.

1. FC 2008.06c
2. FC running on Laptop. Installed on internal drive
3. Yes, I get sub menu new folder. And can select new/microsoft excel-sheet.
And many other items foldewr, link, other office documents,..
4. I'm runnig with local administrative rights. Not full admikn rights.

It works to create Rich Text Document and some other Office 97 documents.
Maybe the reason is that Access 97 is installed too. As I remeber this was installed after Office 2002. Maybe FC looks up old, wrong registry keys.

I tried to find registry keys responsibel for executing new-file. But too much for me at the moment.

The first thing I would be doing is starting FC with a fresh ini file. This can be done by using the /NewIni=<new filename.ini> command line switch.

Perhaps it's a missing unicode support issue, are you using 64 bit OS?

Please check the templates folders:
C:\Documents and Settings\....\Templates\

I think you should have some templates file in the folder. For Excel e.g. excel.xls or excel4.xls.

Hello Deamer, Marek,

I'm not using 64 bit OS. I've XP Professional SP2.

Tried starting with new ini-file. No success.

Templates in C:\Documents.... are there. This was not the cause.

Fixed my problem by this.
I checked registry for all keys Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders, Value Templates. Copied Templates to these folders. I'm sorry but I didn't check after each copy, if FC now works. Thereforee I don't realy know what was the cause.
But I assume that XP looks in M:\Eigene Dateien\Vorlagen, which is a network drive. Seem's I deleted these folder. You have to know that my laptop is for business and M:\ is my personal network drive.

Thanks for your help.

I'm a great fan of FC!!!!
