Option to include / exclude items in the file list, perhaps a drop-down menu (or radio buttons) with different options for details/list/thumbnails view:
( ) details ( ) list (o) thumbnails
[x] Folders
[x] [..] item
[ ] Archive files
[ ] Audio files
[x] Image files
[ ] Text files
[x] Video files
[x] Custom files [dll|ini|shc]
[ ] Custom files [dat|bin|chm]
[ ] All other files
Include / exclude items in the file list
Include/exclude items in file list
Good idea , perhaps install in Splitter Bar. Be very convenient.
I don't think if spltter bar is the right place, but in the settings dialog, individual options for different modes, or even special favorite modes might be useful. For example:
- in details view show all files
- in list view show only common files - might be useful for novice users, for example there is a game with 20 files, but only the exe, lnk, bat files would be visible, of course also multimedia and text files should be visible by default (mp3, jpg, avi, mpg, doc, txt...)
- in thumbnails view only some of multimedia files should be visible, I suggest the image and video files - and folders (with the thumbnail preview) - so all the items by which the thumbnails can be created
This is a new suggestion:
Custom views - a button to create a custom view, based on existing view (details, list, thumbnails) - something like Custom columns, but not forced to details view only.
Then all these views (standard and custom) would be available in the menu, view button, keyboard shortcuts...
Few examples of usability of the custom views:
- details view - custom columns are already implemented and more features have been already requested (e.g. mp3 bitrate, video size, audio length...)
file name | ext. | file size | date | bitrate | dimensions | length ...
- list view - show more, custom information, not just name and extension (also extension - and perhaps also name might be customizable), for example:
file name | ext. | file size...
- thumbnails view - custom file information - show the thumbnail and below also more info, not just a name, like this:
[ thumbnail image ]
[ file name ]
[ file size ]
[ EXIF date taken ]
[ dimensions ]
...
And another idea!
Custom information for different file types / extensions - use different (custom) information next to/below a file name, for example, EXIF date taken and dimensions for images, bitrate and length for MP3 files...
I know, it's quite complicated now, but perhaps there should be just option to show concrete info for each group of files. The groups would be the same as for include/exclude items option - and next to these 'groups' there will be another option, it will be th info which should be displayed for this category, e.g.:
- Folders
- [..] item
- Archive files
- Audio files
- Image files
- Text files
- Video files
- Custom files [dll|ini|shc]
- Custom files [dat|bin|chm]
- All other files
Then, just a small option how many information should be displayed in each view, for example:
- details view - 5
- list view - 2
- thumbnails view - 4
Perhaps too many options, but I think it's the best what could be done, because users needs different information for different files and even with wide display it's not possible to display all information for all file types - and it would be quite confusing, EXIF date for text files would be useless.
Another option is to automatically hide 'not needed' information, so the bitrate for images for example, but for some files file date created/modified is needed, but for images, for example, I think it's not needed, EXIF date is more important, so the fully customizable option for different file types would be the best IMO.
If you have a better solution how to display.. this* with as few options as possible, let us know, please.

imagefile1.jpg | file size | EXIF date | dimensions | camera model
audiofile1.mp3 | file size | length | bitrate | artist | title | album
videofile1.avi | file size | length | vide bitrate | audio bitrate | frame rate
archivefile1.zip | file size | unpack size | pack ratio in % | date modified
allotherfiles.dll | file size | date modified | created | last access | attributes
+ the same with less / different info for the list / thumbnails view.
I know it's problably not the best - most important information I have chosen, but it's just an example.
