Total Size of all files in the folder on the Status Bar
I'd like to see a display of "Total Bytes" in the current folder shown on the status bar.
If a users selects files, it will show the total bytes of the selected files, but it does not seem to show "Total Bytes" independent of the selection status.
It would be nice to have that there on the status bar full-time, I think.
Thanks

I'm not sure. If the feature is easy to implement, it's added very quickly, many features I have requested via email or in the forum has ben added already - but some features are not easy to implement (in the current version). Such features might be added in the totally new version.

In this particular instance, it should be very easy to tack on to the status bar, I believe.Dreamer wrote:I'm not sure. It is a number that has to be computed on the fly for Selected Objects, sure, but it should be very quick to total the space as you enter a folder and simply display that total statically.
Unless the user actually changes the contents of the folder, there would be no need to recompute it constantly, I don't think. Even so, a simple refresh after a file operation should be pretty darn quick I would think.
It reminds me of how you can choose to show file sizes in Bytes or display them in KB. The number is already in memory, it's just a matter of tweaking how it shows up.
Already, there are so many things I can do with the recent Free Commander Beta versions that I cannot even come close to doing as efficiently in PowerDesk Pro 5, that I use FC probably 80-90% of the time now. When I first started, the percentages were almost flip-flopped.
When you drill down into a folder and then pop back up, FC actually highlights that folder you were just in. PowerDesk Pro 5 doesn't even do that. It just defaults to the top of the list with no folders selected, meaning you have to work your way back down the list until you reach where that group of folders is shown.
I'm not talking about the new feature in v394, but the way it has functioned for a very long time in the first place.
Say I have the following folders in the middle of a couple of hundred:
Robert Jordan - Conan 1 - Invincible
Robert Jordan - Conan 2 - Defender
Robert Jordan - Conan 3 - Unconquered
Robert Jordan - Conan 4 - Magnificent
Robert Jordan - Conan 5 - Triumphant
Robert Jordan - Conan 6 - Victorious
I want to go into each folder and edit something in the README.TXT file. With PowerDesk, I page down until I get to the CONAN 1 folder, and press ENTER to drill down. I press F4 on the TXT file, do the edit, save it and press Backspace to get back to the upper level.
In PowerDesk, after I hit Backspace, it always goes right back up to the top line of the list. Every single time.
So, I have to page down to find CONAN 2, then enter it, do the change, get back up, then page down again.
With FC, I go into CONAN 1 and do the thing, hit Backspace and that CONAN 1 folder is highlighted. Then all I have to do is press the Down Arrow once and then press the Enter key and I'm in CONAN 2.
Talk about a time saver. Whew!
Anyway, a long time back I had asked Marek to please list the total number of items in the pane. It didn't used to do that. It showed how many files you selected, but it didn't actually show you a static number that would, for instance, show you that there are 52 files in the folder.
Now, I can select 10 files and the status bar shows "10/52 Object(s) selected"
That simple addition has saved me tons of mental computation time.
I know I'm a nag, but I'm just a huge fan of the app and really want it to be something that I can blab about to everyone and get them to start using it. If it's missing something simple that they are used to seeing, they may not be as willing to try using the product. People can be silly that way.
PowerDesk has "Total 26 object(s) - (2.01GB)" on their status bar, for instance. Bad part is, I can't seem to choose to display that total in Bytes instead of KB / GB.
If the feature to display that total is added into FC, perhaps I will have that choice, and I'll get two of my wishes granted instead of just one.

Sometimes these simple, but obvious, little conveniences can make all the difference.
Have a great week,
BK
