Toolbar icons to go back or forward in the history of visited folders

#1 Post by ARdgz » 16.01.2026, 05:48

Hi,
I've been using FC (XE-32) for a short time and I think it's fantastic. I don't understand how the visited folder history works, for example, after browsing subfolders in two or more tabs, when I go back or forward in any of the tabs using the toolbar icons, it takes me to folders that aren't in the current path, but rather according to the folder history list.
For me, the really useful functionality would be like using Alt + Left or Alt + Right, meaning that the forward and backward movements only affect the folders visited in the corresponding tab and not the entire visited folder history. Is there a setting for this that I'm missing?
My computer:
Windows 11 Home, 25H2, 64-bit

Hi Karol, thanks for the reference.
Yes, that's how I have the "Folder history per tab" option configured, with the checkbox selected.

Let me explain my problem with an example. When I start FreeCommander, two tabs automatically open in the left panel:
C:\
C:\Downloads

In the first tab, I go to the C:\temp folder and then back to the root directory. The history correctly displays the visited folders:
C:\temp
C:\

On the other hand, the second tab, where I haven't changed location, shows the folders visited in the first tab:
C:\Users\alber\Downloads
C:\temp
C:\

Since I have other tabs open, the folders visited in those tabs are added to the history of the other tabs.

I don't know if the functionality is designed this way, or if it's something I can change with some setting.

If the option "Delete history entries on close" is active, then on start no history tab is available. If you open some folder in the first tab, the history is saved. If you change to the second tab, the history of the second tab is empty. In such case the history the last tab will be taken over.

Thanks, Marek.

I disabled the "Delete history entries on close" option, and it certainly works as you described.

Is it a bug?
