Feature Request: Treesize View with Subtrees
Feature Request: Treesize View with Subtrees
Hi,
I know this is not an easy one, but I am missing it quite often:
A feature like WinDirStat to have a view on a directory in size and number of files.
I know that I can have the sum, but to really find what takes the space, it is a lot of manual work to find the right "problem".
It would be great if a feature like this could be integrated.
And if possible multithreaded, to gain speed.

WinDirStat is very old and no longer directly available.
There are much better free tools now like WizTree and WizFile
https://www.diskanalyzer.com/
https://antibody-software.com/wizfile/?ref=upgrade
You have access to the full Windows context menu entries for any result line.
Setting FC as file manager for folder openings
allows you to go to an entry from the results inside of FC.

Re: Feature Request: Treesize View with Subtrees
Why not using "Plain view - Folders" (Shift+Ctrl+B) and sort by size? At least as a workaround.
Re: Feature Request: Treesize View with Subtrees
Nice feature which i tried now the first time (using CTRL+B all the time, but this one was missing in my head).
Although not quite the same.
Main folders will not show all subfolder sizes, they will appear as 0 if there is no file in it directly.
example:
c:
---- temp --> 10 GB
---------folder 1 - 4 GB
---------folder 2 - 6 GB
But in the CTRL+Shift+B it will look like this:
temp = 0
folder 1 = 4 GB
folder 2 = 6 GB.
And whats also missing is the number of files, which sometimes even drives system more crazy then pure size.

Oh I know these, but I like FC for the bundling of features, it is one very handy tool bringing a lot of stuff.horst.epp wrote: ↑22.07.2023, 12:30 WinDirStat is very old and no longer directly available.

Someone could always argue, that a feature can be found somewhere else

Re: Feature Request: Treesize View with Subtrees
Right, but I think it's a bug, I'll report it.Mr-Fly wrote: ↑22.07.2023, 15:03Main folders will not show all subfolder sizes, they will appear as 0 if there is no file in it directly.

Could you explain it, please? Perhaps another bug?
Re: Feature Request: Treesize View with Subtrees
So basically the same then above.
if you have a folder temp and two folders inside.
if you add the column "files", it will only cound the direct files in a folder and not the files in all subfolders.
Dont know if this is considered a "bug", as I might want something, that is not intended to be delivered by this feature.
I would like to see a number of all files in all subdirectories.
Can tell you why:
I often have to deal with huge user-profiles in an RDS environment.
The major problem of long login times is not a problem of size of the profile, it usually is a problem of the count of files.
Some users somehow manage it, to eg. put 500.000 files into the temp folder.
or they have a huge number of files in the google chrome directory.
To find these kind of anomalies, I use tools like windirstat (which I use because it can be used portable, without UAC request, while wiztree wants UAC admin access if I remember correctly)

Re: Feature Request: Treesize View with Subtrees
OK, thanks for the reply, I'm not sure if it's a bug, it's number of files or items - and the number is the same in normal mode and in the plain view - folders mode.
For size I think it could be a bug, because the folder size is different in normal mode and plain view - folder mode - and also in the Properties the size is correct, for all sub-items.
Anyway - for the number of items, if there are 2 folders and 2 subfolders in the folder, number of items is 2 in FC, but when using the Properties dialog, it's "4 folders", correct.
I wanted to test it in Explorer, but in Windows 10 it's unavailable for column details, possibly because it's not showing all sub-items, so it can be Windows issue, probably impossible to fix it in FC.
Probably it would be very slow, FC would have to check for changes all the time, in thousands of subfolders, so it can be even impossible.

Re: Feature Request: Treesize View with Subtrees
All subfolder levels for columns: Files, Folders, Itemsif you have a folder temp and two folders inside.
if you add the column "files", it will only cound the direct files in a folder and not the files in all subfolders.
Re: Feature Request: Treesize View with Subtrees
OK, it works for the "Items", just not for "Size".
