Assigning File Associations

#1 Post by zhanmu » 15.10.2009, 01:01

Hi, I'm new to FreeCommander, think it's a great program, probably use it everyday. I have it installed on a USB flashdrive.

Anyway, I had a question about assigning file associations. Since FreeCommander is installed on my flashdrive, I want to associate as many files to programs running from my flashdrive as possible. I was able to use notepad++ as my editor, but I want office files, pdf, webpages, everything pointed at my portable apps. Any suggestions?

I use CAFE Mod to do that. It hasn't been updated in quite a while, but works great for me on XP. Not sure if it works in Vista.

I can't give you actual link, firewall has me blocked, but go to portableapps.com and search for CAFE Mod and/or eXpresso, and you should find the most recent version (spring 2008, I think).
Make sure to read the ReadMe and instructions on set-up windows to learn how to configure it for an "alternate" file manager.

There's another on on that same forum for Portable File Association or Associater, which is newer, and probably has more features, but I prefer the simple-to-use CAFE interface.

The original C.A.F.E is also availabe out on the web, check http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.p ... 7#comments

OOO --- glad you asked the question, I just saw link for a newer modification from Lupo called Coffee, gonna try this one tonight!

Hope this helps.
