JPG / JPEG cannot be added as attachments to posts

When I write a new post and go to

Attachments > Add files

then a window of Windows Explorer pop ups which allows for selection of a file that is to be added to the post. Unfortunately the list of eligible file formats does not contain JPG / JPEG

You can see them by setting the filter to All files
or using drag and drop
but the result is always an error message.
