Older Version?

#1 Post by Fred » 13.12.2009, 20:08

Please forgive a newbie if I am causing grief by asking about older versions, but having trawled around the obvious spots on Marek's web site, and in this forum, I can find no trace of either older versions, or of a policy on them.

As Marek points out on his site, the 2009 versions of freeCommander do not sit happily with Windows 98. They "sort of" work, but various settings cannot be made, etc. So I would like to go backwards and try 2008.06c. Is there a copy available? If it works comfortably on Windows 98, could it be posted on the website as "Last Windows 98 Version" or "Windows 98 users download this"?

For this looks like a superb program, and I would hate to be cursing it, when the true problem is Microsoft's "Constant Upgrade" business model.

Many thanks for your help.

Many thanks for the link. I'll give it bit of work to do over the next week or so, and let you know whether Win98SE picks a fight with it!

Mostly 2009 and 2008 work OK in Win98. My problem is with the FTP facility. With both of these versions it works OK on Win2K and above, but gives error messages on Win98, the "parameter is incorrect" message that has featured in another thread. Clearly FTP implementation uses something that isn't built into Win98. Oh well. Back to the 2007 version, then I won't be tempted to use it.

geoffyates, all help files available here:
http://www.freecommander.com/fc_languages.htm

English version not updated since 2005, you can try newer help versions in other languages and use Google Translater or BabelFish to translate --- paste blocks of text into the translater's window.
