Automated "New Folder" function

#1 Post by Rwills » 25.08.2009, 18:34

FC is creating a "New Folder" every time I left-click and drag. It also does it when I click and drag the scroll bar. It didn't do this before the 2009.02 version, and Windows Explorer doesn't do it, so I assume it is an automation of this version. It is driving me crazy. I have New Folders everywhere, and I can't find any option for disabling the automation. If it makes a difference, I am using Windows XP SP3.

I don't think that this is a normal behaviour or setting!

Try to rename your "freecommander.ini" in FC-install-directory or in specified directory (settings >>> program start) with windows explorer, so that FC starts with a fresh ini.

If the behaviour now is OK make your setting with this new INI.

I did that. It still creates a New Folder.

Mysterious,

You can try the Zip-Version of FC without any installation. Extract it to a directory of your choice and start FC with the freecommander.exe.

I did that. It also creates a New Folder. Perhaps I did not explain with enough detail.

I have a tree and folder view. I find a folder where the tree content exceeds the window size... the scroll bar shows up. Then I left-click an empty space in the tree view. Then it creates a New Folder in the active tree folder.

I have a laptop and this is not happening with it. But on my desktop computer I have several browsers, and FC is the only one that is doing this.

The only difference between the laptop and desktop is that my desktop uses a Kensington (model K64325) trackball. I suppose it could be a function of their driver. But if so, it is undocumented, and it is still only happening with FC.

Likewise, however, it has only happened since the latest version. Is it possible that there might be an uninitiated variable in the code? That could cause this. But it is odd that Windows is not supposed to have this capacity. This sort of motion command is usually only implemented on touch screens for hand held devices.

I hope you can fix this because I prefer to use FC over them. I used to use Commander in the DOS days. I always missed it because it had always been the most efficient browser ever produced. I have been very excited with your development of FC from its architecture. But I am not going to be able to live with all these New Folders.

F7 is the hot-key FreeCommander uses to create a new folder. Just mentioning this in case the Kensington trackball is using system wide hot-keys as functions of the extra buttons.

I suppose you could test this out by assigning a new hot-key (or hot-key combo) to the "New Folder" function in FreeCommander and then test to see if your issue persists.

I did that... it still does it. But this made notice something new... the New Folder is not being made in the manor that the CF system does so. CF always asks for a Name, but this isn't asking. It just makes a folder, and it is named NewFolder (1). It always adds a numeral to the name.

I'll check things again on the Trackball. It looks as if it is likely that Kensington is causing the trouble.

If it is not the Tackball... have you heard of any virus that does this? It would have to be a new one, because I have anti-virus software.

I still can't find anything in the Trackball. But if it were the Trackball or anything else, it still doesn't explain that only FC and my Desktop are vulnerable to it.

I recently had to rebuild my computer, and doing so resolved the problem. The "New Folder" problem wasn't there anymore. So it must have been some quirk that another program had left behind, and it was being invoked in Free Commander by lucky chance. When I was looking for a browser and found FC, I was also reviewing many other browser programs. I was also still searching after I had chosen FC. I assume one of them had left it behind when I uninstalled it. Everything is great now. Thanks for your effort.
