New to FC - have a few questions...need expert help!

#1 Post by uradodah » 15.05.2009, 06:57

Hello all.

I hate to admit that I just yesterday found FC and now I've been wondering where it's been all my life! I love the program!

I'm pretty picky about my setup, however, and am running into a few things that I don't yet know how to do - or whether or not FC can do them. While I have a few PC's - 2 laptops, 1 desktop - I mainly use my notebook which has a 1280 x 800 screen resolution (13.1 inch). In other words...not a lot of screen real estate.

That said...on to my questions:
  • ~ Can the toolbar items be moved from one toolbar to another? For example, can I move items from the "Edit", "Folder 1" and "View" toolbars to the "File 1" and/or "File 2" toolbars to create one or two "master" toolbars consisting of all my preferred functions? I realize the toolbars are named specific to their contents and actions - but this is honestly the first program I've run into where I couldn't add or remove items to/from a toolbar using a master list of all available functions.
  • ~ Another toolbar question - is there a way to add more dotted line separators if/when needed? I'm referencing the "-----------" separators in case you're wondering what I mean. :)
  • ~ Now, a question regarding the "Tree" navigation area. I prefer to use FC in the vertical view setting. However, I like using the 'tree' navigation area for both panels (left and right). Is there a way to use one tree on the far left side while allowing it to control both panels - whichever one is the 'active' panel?
  • ~ Is there a way to have different background colors for the 'active' and 'inactive' panel (file list) backgrounds?
  • ~ Finally, is there a way to configure the Tree so that it looks similar to the one in the image shown after clicking the link below? In other words, if I want to jump to my desktop by using the Tree, is there a way to have a 'Desktop' item at the top of the tree (see image)? I guess I've gotten used to seeing it that way since the standard Windows Explorer shows it that way as does most other Explorer replacement programs.
Here's a link to the image - I've provided a comment box within the image regarding the Tree panel (as noted above):

I've been using the free version of another Explorer replacement program but I'd rather switch over to FC full-time as it kicks major booty over the other one. :D

My apologies if I've missed any answers to my questions that may already be noted in the forum. I looked through each page and didn't see anything specific to my questions. I also apologize for the length of my post.

Thanks in advance for your help - and thanks for a fantastic program!

Hello,

Please support this suggestion - Single tree for both panes.
  • ~ Is there a way to have different background colors for the 'active' and 'inactive' panel (file list) backgrounds?
Custom background color for active/inactive panel
  • ~ Finally, is there a way to configure the Tree so that it looks similar to the one in the image shown after clicking the link below? @ uradodah --- Your first two toolbar questions tell me you are a fellow spirit who loves to tweak.

I don't think it is possible to move the buttons between the default toolbars, or add separater bars to them,
but you CAN make custom toolbars with whichever of the FC commands you want.
I did this, and have all my most-used FC commands on a single "Favorite Tools" toolbar named "Utility", and then I un-selected all the default toolbars so none of them show.

Go to menu Extras, Favorite Tools, Edit.

When the editing dialog opens, the top window says Tools. At the right of that window are icons to add, re-name, and remove custom toolbars.
If you have existing toolbars, click the down-arrow next to Tools and select the name of the toolbar you want to edit, or just use the Tools one that is there by default.

Under that "toolbar name" window are the small icons to add and edit the tools that you want on the toolbar you selected. Click on the arrow on the icon "Items:add to list" , and click on one of the selections on the drop-down list for a Program, a Folder, or the small arrow at right of Command if you want to put a Freecommander command on a button (for example, you might want a command to toggle show/hide hidden files.)

If you want to add a program, click the button that says Program ...
and browse to the program you want.

You will see that you can also add a Separator.

If you want to edit/change a button that is already on the toolbar, click on the button in the list in the main window so it is highlighted, and go to the right side of the dialog where it says "Programs" and click that down-arrow to choose from the list for a different program, folder, or command.

You can apply your own custom icons to any of the buttons if you want to.

One thing I have found, is that I must go through the MENU, and edit my Favorite Tools from there. On some computers, If I use right-click, "Customise", etc --- the drop-down lists don't let me navigate to the FC Commands.
