Version 2009.1 will be the last version of the regular FC?

#1 Post by Bearded Kirklander » 14.01.2009, 12:46

I read the announcement. I did not know it was there until tonight.

It sounds like the 2009.1 release will be the final version of the regular Free Commander program. Is that correct?

If it is going to be the last one, is the Final Non-Beta version coming out soon?

Right now there is Beta 396 but I don't know if any more Beta releases will be done or if it nearly ready to "go gold".

Thanks in advance for answering my questions.

Still no answer.

I had hoped for one.

Please reply soon, if you would. I would appreciate it.

Thank you,

BK

The next release ( I think in ca. 4 weeks) will be the last version of the first-generation development. I work already on the FreeCommander second-generation.

Thank you for the response. It's good to have that figured out.

BTW, have you considered releasing Free Commander First Generation (through the 2009.1 release upcoming) as Open Source under the GPL?

That way, others could build upon the excellent work that you have already done, fix bugs, do some tweaks, etc. so that the codebase is still viable and updated, while you work on the next generation of the product.

It could make the First Generation of Free Commander even more popular than it is now and help lead to a larger user base for your next release.

An idea that is hopefully worth consideration, and would be in the spirit of the Free Internet concept.

What think?

Any idea when the first trial version of the newer Free Commander might be available?

By the way - what does the CA stand for in:

( I think in ca. 4 weeks )

I'm not at all sure what it means or signifies and was hoping you could help me out.

Thanks.

I look forward to the 2009.1 final release when it does come out.

Is it really so important when FC 2009-01 or new version comes out?
I think Marek will present them when they are ready and don't think he made a precise project-roadmap.

Thanks for the link.

And yes, I think those folks who are not in the Beta program could really benefit from a 2009.1 release. So, the sooner the better, imo.

:?: Hey Marek,

for the complete rewrite, what environment are you considering (WPF?)
And would you consider open sourcing it, so others can volunteer to help out ? I'd willing to spend a little time helping out.

Is 2009.02 - the last release of the original FreeCommander product?

If so, I hope you will open source it so others can pick up the banner from where you have carried it for so long.

Would be a nice gesture to the community, imo.

Thanks

16.03.2009 = Beta 405

That version seems to be the very latest available. Is that correct?

Will there be a FINAL (non-Beta) of that release?

Also, will there be any more updates to that code-base? Or is 405 going to be the very last update after all?

IF SO - I would like to ask a favor.

Could you please update the HELP > ABOUT dialog to reflect the up-to-date numbers?

For example where it currently reads:

FreeCommander 2009.02 donor

Could you please put something like this instead:

FreeCommander - 16.03.2009 - Revision 405

With either BETA or FINAL at the end of that line?

It would be a nice, non-confusing bit of version coordination.

Thanks much.

Still using the app and lovin' just about every single bit of the thing.f

I really, really appreciate all the hard work. It's a fantastic app.

Have a good weekend,

BK
