Not maintaining location in file pane when creating a folder
Using FC v394 Beta on Windows XP SP2
Even though I have the setting active, I notice that when I create a new folder, that entry ends up at the bottom of the file pane instead of appearing where expected in relation to existing entries.
For example, say I have the following entries in the pane which shows a total of 25 lines and these specific entries start 5 lines from the top of the file list in that pane:
Orson Scott Card - Ender Book 01
Orson Scott Card - Ender Book 02
Orson Scott Card - Ender Book 03
Locationally, those 3 folders are on Line 5, Line 6 and Line 7 near the top of the pane.
If I want to add an entry for the 4th book in the series, I press F7 to create a new folder and enter in the following:
Orson Scott Card - Ender Book 04
Instead of putting that entry just below Ender Book 03 and showing up as Line 8 in the pane, it shows it as the very last line in the pane.
So in this example, those 3 books that were on lines 5, 6 and 7 end up as lines 22, 23 and 24 in the pane file list.
And the newly created 4th entry ends up on line 25 in the pane file list.
With the location retention feature enabled, it should have maintained the position of those original 3 folders in that file pane, shouldn't it?
Hope that is a good enough example to convey the situation.
If you need more, please let me know.
Thanks

I'm sorry - I should have included more information.ralfso wrote:I can't confirm.
The option >>> Settings >>> View >>> Sorting >>> Folder always at the end of a list is correctly deselected?
The feature I'm talking about is shown on this page:
viewtopic.php?t=775
In the entry for Release 392/09.11.2008
New: restore scroll position when going up - only if ChangeDirBackScrollToOldPos=1 defined in the freecommander.ini
Hope that makes more sense.
Sorry,
I defined the option "ChangeDirBackScrollToOldPos=1" in my ini and freecommander has the same behaviour as before:
a new folder is created even at the right alphabetical position and not at the end of the list.
Or do I misunderstand your problem?

Okay - I am hoping that some screen shots will help to convey the issue where my lack of verbal skills should not hamper things.ralfso wrote:Sorry,

Here are some 800x600 screen shots.
The FIRST one shows the positions in the file pane BEFORE I create the new folder/directory:

This SECOND one shows the positions in the file pane AFTER I have created the new folder/directory:

My expectation is that the new entry, Orson Scott Card - Ender Book 04, would appear on line SEVEN, one line below the Orson Scott Card - Ender Book 03 entry as shown in the FIRST screen shot. Like this:

Instead, it drops all the way down near the bottom of the file list.
Does that help explain it a bit better?
If you would like additional clarification / explanation, please let me know and I'll do what I can.
Thanks
Okay,
now a can cofirm the situation.
If there are less entries than the high of the filepane, the scroll position can't change.
If there are more entries than the high of the filepane I have a vertical scrollbar and the scroll position (focus) after creating a new folder is switched to the bottom of the visible filepane.
I think, this doesn't matter with the ini-entry "ChangeDirBackScrollToOldPos=1", because I used my "old" ini without this entry.
Now I can say "Yes, it's right". For me this is not really a problem? The focus always appears at the same position at the bottom of the filepane, so I never recognized this behaviour before.

I have 1600x1200 LCD's and used to use a 21" CRT at 1920x1440 and sometimes 2048x1536, so I do have a good amount of vertical room.ralfso wrote:Now I can say "Yes, it's right". Also, I have many, many directories for various things, such as music, audiobooks, photos, etc. 100 to 300 directories in the same folder is not uncommon, and until just recently, I had one that was over 1,000 in terms of directories in a single folder. I broke it into two folders with about 500 each to increase speed as I work with my external hard drives to synchronize.
I'm kind of a hardcore guy when it comes to file management. Anyone who used Norton Commander for DOS a lot can sort of see why my expectations might be so high.
Free Commander is about as close to file management perfection that I have found in the post 8.3 file name, Windows GUI era, and I'm immensely grateful to Marek for working so hard to add features to the product. I've hardly ever encountered an author of an application that is so open to comments, suggestions and requests.
There are so many wonderful features it's hard to keep up on them all.

Thanks for the back and forth - it's kinda fun to chat about Free Commander and the more I practice, perhaps the better I get at articulating points.
Have a great weekend!
Nice to have such problems, with a 19' TFT there aren't such problems.Bearded Kirklander wrote: I have 1600x1200 LCD's and used to use a 21" CRT at 1920x1440 and sometimes 2048x1536, so I do have a good amount of vertical room.

I just don't think I could be productive at any resolution less than 1600x1200. I went with 20.1" LCD's because the pixel density is quite good, and I do prefer 4:3. I've tried 24" LCD's at 1920x1200 and they just weren't right for me. The 23" Apple Cinema at 1920x1200 was a pretty impressive LCD, but it is much too expensive, imo. The Viewsonics and HP and Samsung were between $350 and $450 or so. The Apple display was nearly $1,000, if I remember correctly.ralfso wrote:Nice to have such problems, with a 19' TFT there aren't such problems.
I do think that if I was to have an LCD for gaming only, I would not mind having a 17" at 1280x1024. Dungeon Siege only goes 1024x768, and Jazz Jackrabbit 2 is 640x480. So, I either choose DO NOT SCALE in my Nvidia driver to get the images to center in the middle of the screen with black space on all 4 sides, or I do scale, and the graphics become all blurred and pixelated.
Anyway, one of the cool features about Free Commander is that you can create Layouts to fit just about any need and any screen size. That's something a lot of other file managers just don't have.
