Release timeline - donor x32, x64 vs public

#1 Post by CovenStine » 23.12.2025, 15:46

I just am curious about how the donor/public release cycle works.
The 64 bit purchase page states: "Updates for public 32 bit version – once per year, updates for 64 bit version – several times per year"
As of this moment, I'm running version 921 public, but the x64 version available is 920, which looks to have been released a year ago yesterday.
This has me a bit confused, because I've seen notifications of like 15 new versions that were released this year, all of the 9xx-donor variety.
It makes sense that there's been no new public version since 921 was released, but are the x32 -donor versions between public releases all betas? Is that why I don't even see download links for say, 932-donor- or is it simply because I'm not a donor at present?
Why is the x64 version a full year (and about 15 releases) out of date, isn't that more spread out than the schedule for those releases?
Because looking at these facts, it seems like buying a 1-year license is not really useful from a user's POV, if there are no updated -donor downloads, for x32 or x64 versions during that year...

I'm not upset or trying to complain, I just want to understand what I'm buying.

Thanks for your help y'all

I don't know how you look up the x64 version.
Donors have a separate download page.
We are currently at the following version
FreeCommander XE 2025 Build 939 64-bit donor
It is updated several times a year and dos not follow a fixed cycle.
Windows 11 Home, Version 25H2 (OS Build 26200.8117)
Everything Version 1.5.0.1408a (x64), Everything Toolbar 2.3.0, Listary Pro 6.3.6.99
FreeCommander XE 2025 Build 946 64-bit donor

The process can be a little confusing IMO. When you sign up for the donor subscription, the automatic system first gives you access to the 920 donor version (at least that was the case when I signed up on 20 Nov). After that, someone manually sets up an account which then enables access to the latest version. I was confused by this at first too.

I was pulling the x64 version info from this page.
When I posted this, the version listed was 920- I assumed that the version had been updated, but the page/link name had not.
So, hoping for an updated version to be available after paying for an x64 license, I did the one-time purchase on 28 November 2025, and got build 920 x64, which was one build older than the public build at the time.

I do want to figure this out, as I've received notification that build 940 public has been released, and the x64 page has been updated to show FreeCommander XE 2026 build 940- I'd like to buy a license at this point, but I want to understand this first.

Donors have a separate download page.
Is there another page that is only available to 1-year or 2-year donors with incremental releases, and one-time-download donors only have access to the page above to download the x64 version on a roughly-yearly release schedule, similar to the public release?
Again, I don't mind, I simply want to understand, because it didn't make sense to me that I had been alerted that build 932-donor had been released, but I was only able to download build 920 from the x64 page.
Thanks very much for your help.

Sorry, this reply wasn't up when I started writing.

So, I guess that means that one-download folks only get major releases, and don't get the page with the latest version.

Edit:
I guess I'm just an idiot for misunderstanding the rules for x64 downloads:
There are no program updates for this option. This is not the last program version.
I didn't read that to mean "This is not the latest build of FreeCommander XE x64, it is the major build release as stated on the x64 download page"

Perhaps this could be clearer, but this is my mistake- sorry to waste your time.

All your questions are here explained: https://freecommander.com/en/64bit-downloads-rules/

I think, all 64 bit users are allerted about new version.
If that bothers you, you can turn it off - set "Check for updates" for Never.

You're right, I misunderstood "There are no program updates for this option. This is not the last program version."
My confusion was on the 1 download not being the latest release. I understand it would not remain current, with further releases, I just didn't realize that, in November, it was already out of date

I don't see any way to delete this question, but the x64 downloads page is now much more explicit, so this whoooole mess is moot.
Thanks very much for that.
Have a good new year, for those of you using the Georgian calendar...

I'm still slightly confused, given my old age of 79, and I've used the donor version for many years. The info link doesn't address the donor. I think version 939 is the latest donor version, which I have, but it shows an update is available for 940. It seems it's only for the non-donor version, so I should stay on version 939, as I think I understand it....

If you have access to 64 bit downloads - you can simply use the 940.
