I am using Portable 64-bit Donor 911 on Windows 10 Home Version 22H2 64-bit. I have Notepad++ set as my editor. When editing files on an FTP server, they open as expected in a temp folder like in the image below, but when I Save changes, the modified file doesn't always get uploaded back to the folder on the server.
EDIT: in case it makes a difference, the connection is SFTP.
Sometimes it does upload if I wait long enough, but other times it won't.
Does FreeCommander detect the file difference when I do a save, and is it supposed to immediately upload to the server? Or is it following some other logic to when the changes get saved?
I don't know if what I am seeing is a bug, or whether FC is following a rule that I don't understand.
File edited over FTP connection doesn't upload changes?
Re: File edited over FTP connection doesn't upload changes?
I tried to reproduce it with similar program PSPad, alternative to Notepad++.
I created test.txt file on SFTP, opened in editor from FC in PSPad, changed content, saved - now the file is not updated on SFTP yet, but when I close PSPad, additional dialog FreeCommander is shown:
"The file 'test.txt' was changed. Do you want to copy it into '...'?
If I click "Yes", the file is updated correctly, always.
If I click "No", the file is not updated.
Few related issues:
- path in dialog is not fully shown
- "X" button to close dialog is not working

Re: File edited over FTP connection doesn't upload changes?
It works the same way for ftp and sftp.
The changes will only be saved after closing the editor. As already described by Dreamer, you will be asked if the changes should be uploaded.

Re: File edited over FTP connection doesn't upload changes?
Thank you for explaining that the editor needs to be closed. I can now confirm that it works as described, and that there is a prompt when I close Notepad++.
But I also discovered why it hasn't worked consistently for me.
I tend to have Notepad++ open all the time. So, when choosing Edit for a file on an FTP server, FreeCommander opens the file in the already running copy of Notepad++, which is what I would expect. But then when the file is saved and Notepad++ is closed, there is no prompt to copy the file back to the server.
It looks like FreeCommander needs to have opened a fresh copy of the editor itself, for it to be able to detect when it is closed.
Now that I understand the process, I can work with that. Thanks again.

Confirmed, using PSPad, same result.susan wrote: ↑06.08.2024, 03:11I tend to have Notepad++ open all the time.
