Compare Files

#1 Post by bwitzed » 09.08.2008, 04:57

I saw that your program has a compare function. Can you tell me exactly how it works?

You see, I have a problem. My data harddrive was formated and then the files were recovered without their files names or their tree. I had some duplicate stuff in different directories that I copied to this disk. (I had asked my brother to do a clean install on my computer and goofed by not removing this drive with all my data backed up to it.) So now I not only have a whole bunch of files I don't know what they are but I also have tons of duplicates.

Is there anyway to use your compare function to find exact duplicate file contents on a whole drive (without having to click on each file)? If not, could you create it. I really need a duplicate finder.

Another feature that would be nice is if, in addition to an exact duplicate finder, it would identify files that were similar in content but not exact and be able to show the original dates of creation (in the case of formerly deleted files) and modification?

If not, can you direct me to software that does that?

Thanks.

You can define a file-compare-program like "examDiff" or "winMerge" for comparing two files selected in FC.

See http://www.freecommander.com/fc_utilities_en.htm at "Compare files"

Try anti-twin http://www.rosenthal-software.com/en/an ... nload.html or easy duplicate finder ( http://www.easyduplicatefinder.com )

There are many programs for file compare, I just tried WinMerge, but it looks it's just for text files. Is there any program, working with FC, also for folders and all file types - text, image, multimedia files?

For example if I want to find duplicate files in one folder with image files (incl. subfolders.). I want to manually delete duplicate files - I want to see a dialog with preview of both images, file name, path, file size, image dimensions... Then option - button to delete a duplicate file (left or right), perhaps also a keyboard shortcut. The same for other files - for mp3 files show ID3 tag, file size, length, bitrate and perhaps a play button to listen the file. It should be intuitive, easy to use - it's not for me, just show the similar files and buttons to go to next similar file, or delete the file on left or right.

If there is no such a program, what about such a feature in FC?
