How to connect to FTP?

I want to be able to connect to FTP server from my phone. Each time i select new ftp connection it shows me the option for remote path and local path, both of which i dont know how to fill up. i only know the host address. If there is already a thread detailing what to insert into these fields for a new ftp connection, please point me in that direction. thank you.
