Splitter Bar Hot Spot

#1 Post by wrbird » 05.04.2014, 20:15

I just tried out the option to show hot spot on splitter bar, great feature! A single click on the upper portion of the hot spot expands right panel 100% with the splitter bar remaining visible. This is great! Single click on the bottom portion of the hot spot expands left panel 100% with splitter bar invisible. This is not great:( Is there a setting so splitter bar remains visible just like it does for the left panel?

Better yet, add the functionality to splitter bar when double clicking in it when it's at 50% the active panel will expand to 100% with splitter bar shown. Then you can double click in it again (this functionality already exists) to take it back to 50%.

This might be a bug since the splitter bar remains visible in one direction but not the other. What do others think?

For me, it doesn't seem to be a bug (just design inconsistency, not a bad thing, really).

My question: why do you need a full width panel + splitter view?

Excellent question.

I have learned that (at least for me) having the panels one on top of the other is the most useful mode. But where to put all the tool icons? Ideally, the address line toolbar would be the best place, but there is no way in the UI to change the size of those icons. They are too small to be usable for me. So that leaves the top toolbar and the splitter bar. The top toolbar works well, but when changing the bottom pane, the toolbar buttons are physically very far from what is being modified. It requires moving the cursor too much. Placing all the tools on the splitter bar is a good compromise. It's in the middle of the screen, so is always readily accessible.

The trouble is that when you temporarily switch to single pane mode, all your tools on the splitter bar disappear. Ideally, I would like to see an option to always show the splitter bar, even when temporarily in single pane mode.

To answer your question of way you need a splitter bar with a 100% panel is because I have tools on the splitter bar that I use to manipulate files in one form or another, such as rename, or properties, or viewer. I know there are a number of different ways these functions can be handled, but if you're going to have the splitter bar visible for one panel you should make it visible for the other as well. That was the intent of my original post.
