[652x64] PDF Viewing in BOTH File Viewer and Quick Viewer

#1 Post by TheMilesHome » 10.02.2014, 17:33

PDF Viewing (.pdf in Internet Mode) doesn't seem to work in either the full File Viewer or the Quick View pane. I get a blank page with an "X" in the top left corner. This seems to work fine in the x32 version 652, and the Internet Mode seems to render .htm files appropriately in x64. I also tried this with a default settings and no plugins option, to no avail.

Software versions - FreeCommander XE 2014 Build 652 donor, Windows 7 SP1 64-bit

As an aside, I'm using the 64 bit version almost exclusively for a few days now and everything else seems good. Thanks for the great work!

I'm using the wlx SLister from Total Commander which makes use of Sumatrapdf.
This works fine in the x64 version of FCXE (Donor build 653).

PDF's can't be displayed natively by FC's internal viewer (or quick viewer). At least I couldn't find how to do it in either 32 or 64 bit versions.
I'm also using sLister plugin and it works great (for other document formats, too).

Hi Guys...

First, thanks for responding with the plugin solution to my problem. I'm probably gonna give it a shot this coming weekend. I actually think I have a copy of both the 32 and 64 bit slister files in a storage folder somewhere. I do want to tell you what I know and what I think, though, just in case there was a misunderstanding about the native support of FC.

I know it's worked without a plugin on both the most recent 32 bit versions of FC XE (donor) as well as the last version of good, old fashioned, FC 2009 (a true classic), on my particular system. Like I said, it shows it in quick view and the full file viewer as an internet document. One of the reasons I know there is no plugin is because I have absolutely no idea how to use one in FC. :) Not that I won't figure it out, I just never needed to use it before (although I may have attempted a zip plugin in the past). But I did look at the plugin sections of the most recent 32 bit donor version and can report there are no plugins existing and it STILL renders the pdf appropriately.

Here's what I think. I think it's using the browser plugins to get the job done. I use Firefox with the Adobe Reader plugin. When a PDF is rendered in FC, it shows that it's being rendered as an internet document and actually displays the Adobe Reader controls like it would in Firefox. That's one of those things I liked about it.

Here's what I don't have a clue about - I'm guessing since Firefox is a 32 bit app and it's using the (obviously) 32bit Adobe Reader plugin in to get the job done, the 64 bit version of FC XE fails. Where it doesn't make sense to me is that usually (emphasis on NOT ALWAYS - lol) the 64bit version can use a 32 bit plugin with some backward compatibility. If I get a fever to do some testing, I'll test this with Slister.

But thanks again for the backup plan of Slister, if all else fails I'll pop it in instead of going back to the 32bit when I need to. The 64bit is just noticeably quicker and I'm sticking with it.

Thank you guys!
Frank

Well, I did some experimenting on my system (Vista x64). I use PDF X-Change Viewer to view PDF files. They have both 32-bit and 64-bit versions in a single installer. During installation, I installed plugins for both Opera (my default browser) and Internet Explorer. FCXE-x64 appears to use the 64-bit plugin for Internet Explorer. I verified this by removing the IE 64-bit plugin from the PDFViewer folder. My 32-bit Opera browser uses the 32-bit plugin from the PDFViewer\win32 folder.

Oh, that must be it (the browser plugin). My problem was that I always filter any issue through my love for portability (can't depend on a browser plugin that may or may not be installed on a system). :P

Do you have protected mode disabled in Internet Explorer? PDF X-Change Viewer doesn't work in Internet Explorer on my system and I read in the PDF X-Change knowledge base that the plugin only works if protected mode is disabled. I am not willing to do so and so I cannot view PDF files with PDF X-Change in FC.
