Odd behavior for Settings folder

#1 Post by Tregonsee » 11.07.2012, 22:40

I am using WIN7 Pro 32 bit, and the latest version of FCXE beta. I created a separate directory and unzipped the beta there. After running it, I found that in addition to the usual place for the Program Data, there was a similar Settings directory created in the directory which I have designated for downloads. When I deleted that one, FCXE was unable to find its settings, even though the Program Data information was still there. A minor issue.

the file "fcStart.ini" contains FC settings location.
unfurtunatelly when you download & unpack a fresh FC version this file is missing,
then its settings are saved here:
C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\FreeCommanderXE

-> FC is not portable by default! I posted already about this BUG but nothing happened!

in order to prevent FC from creating bullshit files in a hidden folder %appdata% create a file fcStart.ini,
before starting FC the first time, then open it in notepad and enter:
[Start]
freeCommanderIniDir=%FcSrcPath%

save it in the same folder where FreeCommander.exe is located. when starting now FC all settings remain in the same folder,
and your system is not messed up!

There's a quicker way to make FCXE portable without knowledge of the fcstart.ini-commands.

After unzipping create a empty file "freecommander.ini" in the FCXE-folder (or better in a "settings"-subfolder).
After first start FCXE uses the empty "freecommander.ini" for the settings and also this folder for all other setting-files.

Yep Ralfso and the program also will create in your selfmade settings folder, another folder for your FileContainers.
For the use of those, read the topic: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3673
I say, what a day...
