Change Icon (al least for favorites)

#1 Post by hellAT » 25.05.2012, 15:20

Hello,

is there a possibility to change the icon (a heart) for the favorites?

yeah, there is always a way. in this case, first unpack the exe then grab your favorite resource editor optionally get an icon extractor as well and simply exchange the icon. the problem with this approach is that you'll lose your custom icon each time you update FC. I don't like the heart design either (looks not very pro), so maybe one day FC will support skins and a talented GUI designer creates an appealing user interface (skin).
IMO without SKIN SUPPORT / RIBBON GUI INTERFACE / GUI REDESIGN, XE will look pretty outdated by autumn when Win8 Explorer is released.

I agree, but it's not so easy, first a talented GUI designer who creates an appealing user interface must do it - for free, or for a lifetime access to the beta version. If you know some, please let us know.

I might have a change of heart, myself! Actually, I wouldn't mind helping out a bit with a few icons. I don't have much time, but I'm willing to help with some. How can I help?

AFAIK FC runs on win only, so as a primarily windows application it should have a windows look & feel.

IMO implementing a ribbon interface is inevitable, including an option to toggle to "classic mode" with toolbars for those who dislike ribbons.

with a decent ribbon including drag & drop support everyone could simply rearrage,add,delete.. any command, icon, file, folder in an easy intuitive way - the best layouts could be saved out and offered for download.

for ribbon gui see:

I found a free ribbon here maybe there are more free.

further GUI enhancements could be:
- gestures

- radial menu: access favorite commands via RMB

You can help. FC XE has many features but no help. Many users have problems with simple functions or settings:
- how to define toolbars
- how to use favorite tools
- how to use self defined columns
- how to use filters
- how to use quick filter
- how to use status bar
- how to use multi rename
......
You could use http://dokuwiki.freecommander.com or you could simply write as doc or txt file.
If you like DokuWiki, let me know, I will register you.

Marek, I will take you up on that. I actually like writing documentation, and I think I've even got a knack for it. I will give your docuwiki a tryout and let you know. Since I love toolbars, that will be my first thing to tackle.

@inglorious - those are fancy things. Personally, I absolutely detest ribbons. Radial menus are glitzy, but a waste of space, and are hard to configure and look good if you change the number of buttons. I don't think mouse gestures are a good idea, either - they might work on a blank folder panel, but once you have a folder full of files and are using the mouse to keep your visual position whilst you search for a particular file when you don't know the name, it would be an issue. Besides, file operations are more delicate than simple web-browsing. I think mouse-gestures are great for web-browsing, but not refined enough for file browsing.

However, the New Tab button icon next to your tabs isn't a bad idea. Right now, however, I can just double-click in the tab bar to get a new tab.

@BGM a radial menu is probably not the best idea, considering the performance of FcContextMenu64.exe on x64 systems. thanks embarcadero ;) as for gestures you don't need any white space as commands are invoked by holding down the RMB and dragging. anyway, this are just some suggestions for improvement, I don't know of any other FM with this functionality. of one thing I am sure though, like I said once, ribbon is future like it not - have a look at xplr^2 and you will notice the toolsbars look more and more ribbon like, probably the author does not want to spent any money on pro componentseither.

in case you're a native speaker please have a look at the localization file 'english.lng' I believe some things could be improved there.

okay, it looks that there's no "easy" way to change icons. I know that this no import-feature, maybe it will be implemented some day(?)

Hello Marek, I will also take you up on that. I do operational documentation at work for our equipment. I will give docuwiki a try if you send me the login info. Thanks.

Marek, please give me a login for the docuwiki, so I can try it out.

Also, Marek, the new FC Favourites looks very good! The icons are just right!

Thanks!
