After activating the main menu item "File → Edit" or the "F4" key the file highlighted in the active panel is opened by an external editor.

Under the main menu item "Tools → Settings → Programs" in the tab "Editors", the user may define programs for editing the contents of files, depending on their file extension. On activation of the menu item "File → Edit" or the shortcut "F4", the filters listed in these settings are analyzed sequentially from the top down. The highlighted file is opened by the editor assigned to the first matching filter. If no editor is defined or no filter matches the highlighted file, it will not be opened.

File editing after double clicking

After double clicking a file it will be opened by the program that is assigned in Windows to files with the extension of the file to be opened.
