Savinng space in title bars in Horizontal Split

I'm running XE build 717 in Horizontal Split mode. Compared to old 32-bit, less space remains for the list of files and directories.

A lot of space is taken up by the button bar of drives. I need this bar, but I'd like to be able to make it less tall, so it won't take up as much space.

Space is also taken by the horizontal bar holding the titles of Tabs. In 32-bit mode, this bar only appeared when there was more than one Tab in any given panel. Would be nice to have the same behaviour in XE. I'm not using Tabs often, so I would gain an extra row in each panel.

Just a thought: in Horizontal mode, the Address bar could be merged with the Tabs into a single bar. The active tab could show the full address, while the inactive ones could show just the shortened title as they do now. The only drawback is that Tab titles would shift left-right when user moves between them, preventing the user's eyes to use Tabs as a visual anchor for fixed points.

Regards,
Andrew

In 717 you can add your drive buttons directly in the Action toolbar (and then you can disable the drives bar).

I'm a keyboard person, so I keep the toolbars off. But you gave me an idea. I learned I can use a capital letter to select a drive or another. So I turned off my drive bar altogether, gaining a lot of space.
Always keep one tab open
This makes no difference at all. I still get two almost identical header rows in each panel.
  • - The address gives the full path - this is fine.
    - The tab gives me the drive letter and the last directory level - this is superfluous when there is a single tab.
As seen in Rianna's answer, the old 32-bit behaviour would be nice to have.
Anyway, so far, so good.
