File Being Deleted on Editor Save

When editing in VEdit, I do a 'save', which saves the current buffer (file), and reopens it.
If FreeCommander is open, and the subdirectory is showing with the file 'selected' (because I just used the FreeCommander to drag the file to the editor to open it for editing)
FAR TOO OPTEN TO BE COMFORTABLE ---
the file is deleted
The symptoms are that the editor saves the file, and tries to reopen it, but gives the error that the file is locked by another program.
Upon doing a 'refresh' in FreeCommander, the file is now non-existant.
The editors 'temporary' work file exists (empty, because it was just recreated), but the main file is gone, lost, never to be seen again
Backups are a good thing.
