FC Hangs during Delete Operation

In my downloads folder, I have a lot of old stuff. So I decided to delete a bunch of it - which totalled about 5 GB.
Now I used shift+delete in FreeCommander to remove it.
During the entire operation, FC was totally unusable - about 2 minutes, in fact.
If I click on the FC window below the file-operation dialgoue, I get the little spinner cursor.
And if I move the dialogue around, I get blank areas on the FC window where it doesn't redraw.
shift+delete is set in FC's keyboard shortcuts to "Delete Permanently".
Included is a screenshot from the keyboard settings window.
