I am viewing 2 directories, one on the left, and one on the right.

Somehow, I changed it so that the right-hand window is separated into 2 views, the top being the directory, and the bottom a view of the contents of the select file in the left hand directory.

How do I get rid of this contents view window?

Open the settings > View > Viewer - and change the options you need, probably you have to disable "Use the opposite panel" option.

I can move the viewer around this way, but I want it to go away!!!! How do I dismiss it altogether?

I think I got it. Once I got the viewer to be a separate column, clicking on the separator bar dismissed it.
