Using a 2 panel display with a tree per panel, a drive bar per panel and base folder set to Drive.

If a FILE is selected in the "File list", the Toolbar Icon for "Select all files" and the keystroke sequence (Ctl + Num+) will correctly select all the files in the File List.

If a FOLDER is selected in the "Tree", the toolbar icon for "Select all files" will select all the files in the "File List".
However, the keystroke sequence (Ctl + Num+) does not work the same. In fact it causes the Toolbar Icon to be "dimmed out" and it will stay that way until a file is selected in the File List and either (Ctl + Num+) or (Ctl + Num-) is executed.
Actually, (Ctl + Num-) also causes the "Select all files" Toolbar Icon to be dimmed as well.

The main File menu shows this function dimmed out unless a file is selected in the File List. So I expect that the keystroke sequence and toolbar icon should be ignored (or an error beep) if the active selection is a FOLDER in the tree.

Tested the same on: Windows 7 Pro 64-bit SP1 and Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit

strangely enough, I assigned Shift+Ctrl+A to "Select all files" and this works perfectly well even if focus is on tree panel.
Ctrl+A ("Select all") does nothing when focus is on tree panel.

problem still exists.

if a folder has focus in folder tree:
1) Ctrl+A does nothing, but it should select all files and folders in the pane (not correct)
2) Ctrl++ does nothing, but it should select all files in the pane (not correct)

if I re-assign the shortkeys above:
number 1) still does nothing, but it should select all files and folders in the pane (not correct)
number 2) works, all files in the pane are selected (correct)

659 - this is something that should really get fixed IMO
FileCommanders should do BASIC file management flawlessly.

Update for FCXE-662 or FCXE-662 x64

This problem is better in this release, but NOT fixed.

The toolbar icon for "Select all files" is no longer dimmed when a FOLDER is selected in the TREE and either the icon is clicked or keystroke (Ctl + Num+) is used.

Problem 1:
When a FOLDER is selected in the TREE and either the "Select all files" icon is clicked or keystroke (Ctl + Num+) is used, the selection in the FILE LIST does NOT HAVE FOCUS, they are dim or semi-highlighted (this worked correctly in FC 2009.02b).

Therefore, when a "delete icon" is clicked, FCXE wants to delete the FOLDER in the TREE, not the selected files in the FILE LIST. Ironically, if the mouse is used on the semi-highlighted group of selected files, they can be dragged to another location.

Note that for this test, if "Select All" (Ctl + A) is used everything in the FILE LIST is semi-highlighted, but the FILE LIST does not have focus.

Problem 2:
If the FILE LIST contains a combination of files and folders and a FOLDER is highlighted, clicking the "Select all files" toolbar icon ADDS the files to the highlighted objects, making a delete operation apply to the original highlighted folder as well as the selected files (this was also the behavior in FC 2009.02b).

Fix for these problems:
Either "Select all files" and "Select all" should do nothing if a folder is highlighted in the TREE or focus should be moved to the new selection in the FILE LIST. In my opinion, focus should always be moved to the new selection. That would avoid ADDING selected files to the highlighted folder as described in Problem 2.
