How to view JUST one pane ? (Split window 100/0) ???

How can I set things up so that only a single pane is viewable.
If I click on split window (100/0), and that resize the FULL APPLICATION window, boom, there is that second pane.
I then have to go and reset the window. Then if I resize it .... ooops ... have to go reset it again.
Can I just set it so only one pane is visible and not have to keep reseting it ?
