this may be a dumb question but I'll ask it anyway..
how does compare folders/files work?
I've tried it but it just highlighted some folders and files...I don't understand what
it did..what are the things that were highlighted...why were they highlighted...
somebody explain please....

That's not a dumb question; the results were not clear to me either when I first used it.

What it does is compare the files and/or folders visible in the current two-pane view. The items which are different on either side are selected. Details of the compare are set in Settings > Compare Folders (different results with different settings). You might try out different options to see what works best for you.

An example of its use is with a backup folder. By comparing the original folder with the backup, you can see what may be different. I've been saved a few times when I mistakenly deleted some file from the original folder but didn't know which file; I compared a recent backup and immediately saw what was extra in the backup.
