Why when I look at a file list in FC XE do any files with a .exe extension show a generic icon and not the embedded icon in the .exe file?

Try changing Settings > File/Folder List > Icons tab.
"Extracted" will show the special icon embedded in any particular file.
"Registered" will show the generic icon as registered in Windows.
"Fixed" will show a blank page icon (in Win7, don't know about other versions of Windows).

Ah thanks that did it. I looked at that and was trying the wrong category as the files were on a removable drive and I tried fixed.
