How do I debug an issue with FreeCommander?

Hi,
First of all, I'm probably not alone in thanking Marek and others for this wonderful application. Thank You!
But ...
I have an issue where the favorites tree doesn't get saved with my layout.
I was just about to submit a bug report, but I followed the guidance to install a portable version of FC.
The issue doesn't seem to exist with the portable version (favorites is saved with the layout).
Any thoughts on debugging the inconsistency would be appreciated.

Also, this seems like it would be a fairly common problem (how to debug an issue) and therefore I think it warrants a position in the FAQ.

Sincerely,
Robert

What is your used program version?

The problem usually lies in the settings.
One option is to copy the settings from the non-working freecommander.ini file to the portable version piece by piece. This can be time-consuming.
Another option is to send the non-working settings to me.

The method of comparing two INI files section by section and then coping missing parts is an utter waste of time that will often result with creation of new glitches. Been there, done that

A better method is to use only the main FreeCommander.ini config file. If a given issue prevails, then it it is time to open it and start deleting hundreds of entries at a time, going from bottom to the beginning. And then, the deleted / restored chunks get smaller and smaller. This way it is easy and quite quick to pin point the exact line that is the culprit
