Search file content containing text not working >b896

Hi guys,

FreeCommander XE 2024 Build 905 64-bit donor, Windows 7 64 bit SP1

i have been a long time user of freecommander xe donation version.
its been a while since i have updated, been using version 884 for the longest time, upgraded to version 898, some other versions then 905.

i only just realized recently that the search files/folders -> search file content containing text is not working anymore, as i dont really use that function often.
as i recall it still worked fine in 884, to confirm i downloaded 884 portable to retest this, and it works fine.
i continue to download more recent portable versions to find which version breaks, until version 894.
it continues to work fine for portable 894, but breaks in 896 onwards.

searching the same folder on my hdd, i have attach 2 screenshots, when it works it obviously finds files with my search text inside.
when it fails, it sometimes returns no results, or 1 result.
but then the search window cannot be closed, or cannot cancel the search. pressing cancel does nothing, as clicking the X button or esc key to close.
even leaving the window untouched, thinking its taking time to process or do its thing, after 30 mins taskmgr shows freecommander.exe not using any cpu, and still cannot close. i have to close the entire freecommander program.

can we find out what changed between build 894 and 896 that cause this issue, even in 905 now? thanks.

working in build 894

not working in build 896 onwards

2 questions:
  1. why is the results not returning for a text i am sure is contained in the files searched?
  2. why the search cannot be cancelled or the search window closed if the search fails?
thanks!

In the second screenshot, filter icon is visible on the filter tab. This means that a filter is active.

hi, thanks for reply.

sorry i was trying to test if i filter out the pdf searching/checking if that would help, it didnt.
i forgot to remove the filter.

i tested again without any filter, same results.

i still cannot "cancel" the operation, cannot close the window with X, press escape key.
there is also no progress in the bottom status whereby normally when its searching it will show the files its searching. now its just not showing any status, just a "found 2 files/folders", which by my previous search using b884, clearly shows there are definitely more hits.

I tested searching in FreeCommander folder, searching for text "freecommander", results:
- 894 64-bit - 167 files found
- 901 32-bit - 167 files found
- 906 64-bit - 167 files found

Anyway, I tested again with the text "oper", results, Search window options are the same:
- 894 64-bit, default settings - 281 files found
- 906 64-bit, custom settings - 280 files found
- 906 64-bit, default settings - 281 files found

OK, I got it, when I disable converter, 281 files are found, with converter enabled 280 files found, in 906 64-bit.

Using these converter settings:

Code: Select all

Filter: *.pdf;*.doc;*.docx;*.odt;*.rtf;*.sxw;*.xls;*.xlsx
Program: C:\Programs\xdoc2txt\command\xdoc2txt.exe
Parameters: "%ConvertSourceFile%" >%ConvertTargetFile%
I tried to search in a different FreeCommander folder and the number of results is different when using converter, -1.

However, it could be a different issue, not sure if it's a bug, but it's easy to test in FC folder.

EDIT: Of course, it's a different issue, since the operation in my case is completed, just the number of found files is different.

i did more testing,

- put a single pdf file https://www.seagate.com/www-content/dat ... -en_US.pdf in a folder.
- search for the word barracuda, which is contained on page 1.

-884 finds the file no problem.
-900 fails to find the file, but on error tab shows "file not found: iepdf64.dll", i checked, its in the same root dir as the portable freecommander.exe
i hit search again, and i cannot cancel the search, close the window etc etc, reproducing my issue.

is it related to iepdf64.dll?
the files are different between the builds, 884 has 4.77 MB (5,010,768 bytes) modified Tue, ‎7 ‎February ‎2023, ‏‎18:58:10

896 and higher has 4.80 MB (5,037,392 bytes) modified Mon, ‎21 ‎August ‎2023, ‏‎19:41:54

as a test i took the iepdf64.dll from 884 build and put it into the 905 install, overwriting the file.
restarted freecommander, and issue is fixed

can someone try reproducing below?

use build 894 freecommander:
download https://www.seagate.com/www-content/dat ... -en_US.pdf and put it into folder.
do a search containing text for "barracuda", 1 file is found

use build 896 and higher:
do the same search above, 0 files found, cannot cancel, cannot close the search window anymore

It looks that issue from my previous post is related with this one, version is not a problem here, but converter.

Using the file 3-5-barracudaDS1900-11-1806US-en_US.pdf, search for "barracuda", results:
- 894 64-bit, no converter - 1 file(s) found
- 906 64-bit, converter enabled - 0 file(s) found
- 906 64-bit, converter disabled - 1 file(s) found

Anyway, I can't reproduce this:
cannot cancel, cannot close the search window anymore
Could you test with default settings? Menu - Tools - Start new instance...

i'm not understanding how the converter works.

i have already tried it with default settings by using Menu - Tools - Start new instance... like you said.
downloaded portable versions of different versions to test, on my windows 7 machine, which runs off own settings folder, still same issue happen.

however strange thing is i cannot reproduce this issue at all on my windows 11 machine...
tested exact same versions portable 884, 894, 896, 900, 905 all no issue with text search with same pdf file???

Yes, I can reproduce it but only on Windows 7.
It seems that the iepdf64.dll with the date 02/07/2023 from the version 894 works with Windows 7 and all newer versions do not work.
Try to use the older dll.

thanks for reproducing on windows 7.
ok so i can use the older b894 iepdf64.dll with newer builds, no problem.

however is there any plans to look into this/fix? is this provided by freecommander or by 3rd party?
thanks.
