I have chosen the newly available option of

Tools > Settings > View > File / folder list > Mouse shortcuts > Click with right mouse button [...] > File: icon > Rename

and it - works but works only for files

As I can also choose for my RMB also option of Focus item and Select item, should not then the Rename work also for folders [thus altogether for items and not just for files?

2] Why use inconsistent / misleading naming? Focus item and Select item - but instead of Rename item just Rename? And when, all in all, it should be not item but file and folder for their counterparts?

I don't think it's misleading. For "select" multiple options are available - "select item", "select all items", "select all files", but for "rename" just one option is available.

Moreover, if multiple items (files and folders) are selected and mouse shortcut "rename" is used, multi rename is activated, so if it would be "rename file" or "rename item", it would be incorrect.

Now it make sense

But in concurrence with this logic the Rename still should be changed- but to Rename / Multi Rename, so that it would become more informative. I would be probably months before I would have discovered by accident this second ability, had you not just now pointed it out to me
