ICO files turn their graphics to their predecessor when renamed or moved

#1 Post by Forez » 12.06.2022, 15:59

How to replicate this bug:

1] Go to a website with free icons https://www.iconsdb.com

2] Download one icon in few distinctive colors e.g. red, green, blue

3] Delete from the download folder 1-2 of them

4] Download that very same icon once more - but this time in different color versions e.g. black, white

5] Go and see if you have ICO file in black, white and one of the other original colors - or if you see only the original colors i.e. red, green, blue

This also happens when icons are moved and renamed to location and names that have existed prior to that - as if they were inheriting their content. And to reset them to proper visuals a re-opening of FreeCommander is needed; and also sometimes a reset of the operating system, although I am not sure of this

There are also other ICO files related bugs that have been happening few last versions of FC. Just play around with them and you will start to see some Matrix stuff happening

I am using FreeCommander 861 32-bit public on Windows 10 Enterprise 20H2 19042.746

Have you tried these steps in Windows Explorer?

Of course I did no test this outside FC. But it not my fault that FreeCommander is so handy that I use it for ~99% percent of file handling operation, with the remaining ~0.9% with Mp3tag and the rest with other programs. In other words: Windows Explorer - out of sight, out of mind

I repeated the test. And both FreeCommander and Windows Explorer showed the same wrong [deleted and replaced] icons. I even repeated this with other webbrowser, to eliminate it as culprit [Opera instead of my go-to Firefox]. Result was the same, even when names of the file were different. So apparently FC copied data from Windows Explorer - or took it from the same place in the operating system. But then it got interesting

Because I opened the folder with those icons in XnView MP 0.98.1 x64- and they were showing the right colors right away. So I went back to windows of FC and WE and refreshed the view- but icons still were in wrong colors. So I closed those programs and reopened them. As a result FC was showing the right colors, while Windows Explorer still did not

This is still happening on my system when I am using versions:
● 880 32-bit Public
● 880 64-bit Donor
● 885 64-bit Donor Portable

I tried it with just a single icon, downloaded green icon square-64.ico, opened in Windows Explorer, deleted this icon, downloaded violet icon square-64.ico.

Result is, the new file has green icon.

It means, that it's not a FC bug, but a Windows bug, so probably it can't be fixed in FC, you need to report it to Microsoft.

FC use the icons/thumbnails from Windows, XnView use its own database, it's normal, it's a Windows bug, not a FC bug.

Windows 10 21H1 64-bit.

But what about this then: https://freecommander.com/forum/viewtop ... 533#p40515?

You get that bug but not this one here? [It could be, as you have a never version of Windows: Windows 10 21H1 64-bit. vs. Windows 10 Enterprise 20H2 19042.746 x64]

I wrote, that I CAN reproduce it, but it can't be fixed in FC AFAIK, here is my post:

If you try any bug in FC and Windows Explorer and it will be the same, it's probably a Windows bug and it can't be fixed in FC, that's why it's good to test it in WE.
