Very slow program start ?

Has anyone else experienced *extremely* slow app startup when trying to run FC?

This started for me about 3 or 4 versions back; currently running FreeCommander XE 2022 Build 866 64-bit donor.

Thanks !!

No such effect here.
May be you have some not available network shares in your start-up config.
You may also try to exclude FreeCommander.exe in your anti-virus tool.
For testing start FC with a fresh ini-file.

I am baffled.

I have uninstalled, cleaned pertinent registry entries, deleted FC folders including in APPDATA folders. Same problem.

I confirmed every drive connected or mapped to the system will connect in FC (after it starts eventually); I disabled the antivirus temporarily to see if it had any effect.

No luck.

Every other program I have loads without problems, including other file managers (e.g., MultiCommander loads almost instantaneously).

NOTE: I am using the donor download versions.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks !!

Have you tried to start FC without tree panels?

A user in German forum reported that he had problems (slow start and running) when defining a network share without a drive letter on the desktop.
After he changed to share with letter - the problem was gone.
The problem only happened to him on Windows 11.

If you have any files on the desktop - remove files from the desktop for testing purposes (especially archive and exe files).

Hi Marek

I tried the following:

1. disconnected every mapped drive
2. moved all files except shortcuts from my desktop
3. installed latest version

Unfortunately it still happens. It takes about 3minutes or sometimes more to load FC. I noticed this about a couple of months ago, but since I leave my laptop in sleep mode, it does not affect me unless I have to reboot or I mistakenly close FC.

Before this, it worked very fast; as I mentioned above, I don't have the problem with other s/w.

Windows x64
48GB RAM
SSD drives

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

For your Network files do you have System Icons set to Extracted or Registered. When I changed mine to Registered it made an enormous improvement as each file didn't have to be inspected for an icon.
Settings...View...File/folder list...Icons tab

Marek

yes I do have those settings.

Someone else suggested starting with a clean .ini file. There are several .ini files in the \appdata\local\...\settings directory; which one(s) should I remove?

Thanks

You can use the portable version:

https://freecommander.com/en/faq-freeco ... l-portable

Here you can find the settings folder:

https://freecommander.com/en/faq-settin ... s-location

If you want to use default settings, just close the program first, and then delete ALL files in the settings folder. Consider to backup the folder first:

@Marek

I have disconnected every external drive, and used the default install setup, yet the problem continues.

I looked at my work computer, which has no problem. One difference that I can't explain is that the Control Panel Installed Programs view shows *2* files for FC:
- FreeCommander XE, 9/21/21, 54.4MB
- FreeCommander XE Build 866 64bit, 3/8/22, 56.1 MB

while the problem computer only shows the 64bit install.

Should there be 2 files installed instead of 1 when the installer is complete?

Thanks

Is there any solution for this?
Running donor version 869 on Windows 10.0.19043 Build 19043, updates installed.

Click the icon to start FreeCommander, and
- Nothing (not even wait circle) for a few seconds, then wait circle
- 18 seconds after clicking the icon, a window frame appears with menu, toolbar and tabs, but tree and file area are blank
- after 8 more seconds, the tree and list of files appear
- Doesn't respond to mouse or keyboard input for another 7 seconds or so

If I exit FreeCommander and run it again, I get the same timings.

I have no network drives mapped by letter.

I have OneDrive, iCloud Drive and iCloud Photos, but have had them for several years without incident> Once FreeCommander is running, I can examine the files in these "drives"

TaskManager shows no appreciable CPU or network usage during the startup
