Usually when opening multirename, the "New Name" field is already filled with [n].[e], but not in 864.
I have to select [n] from the dropdown of File name for it to show up.
The screen looks like this:
[864] Multi Rename "New Name" Field is not filled on start
[864] Multi Rename "New Name" Field is not filled on start

Confirmed with default settings, it works good with custom settings.

865 brought no change. Still you have to do "something" in the dialogs for the "New name" to appear.
