Version 860 opening

#1 Post by acre » 01.01.2022, 15:38

Hi all and Happy New Year!

I just updated from the earlier Version 790. When I opened 790, the left and right panes opened simultaneously and instantly. With 860, the right pane opens, filling the entire screen for about 2 seconds, and then the left tree opens. I know it's knit-picking but it is also an annoyance. Why did Version 790 open smoother? Is there a setting I'm missing? Thanks.

I have also noticed this behavior. Ever since release 828 the panels open in odd sequence.

I keep hoping this will be fixed, but until then I am still using release 828.

I do not see such problem.
Have you checked first the portable zip version? http://freecommander.com/en/faq-freecom ... l-portable

Hi Zorkoff and Marek. Thanks for chiming in.

Marek, I'm using "FreeCommander XE 2022 Build 860 32-bit public." I took a snapshot of the path info. I'd like to attach it but I don't see how with this forum software. I have the screen shot in .png format.

According to the link you sent, the folders in my current version are not used in the portable version. Perhaps I should uninstall my version use the portable version?

I downloaded the portable version and it does the same thing. Perhaps I'll go back a couple of versions.

Portable version is for testing, do you have this problem with the portable version, with default settings?

  • Sometimes it's useful to make a screenshot of the problem. You can use the integrated FreeCommander feature (menu > Tools > Desktop Snapshot), or one of many free tools available on the Internet, or just the integrated Windows feature - press PrintScreen to make a screenshot, then open any image editor, e.g. Paint, press Ctrl+V to paste, save it and upload it to https://postimages.org/ , or https://imgur.com/ for example. Do not place large screenshots in the forum, use the links, or thumbnails instead. Please use the English language for screenshots, you can use /Lng=English command line parameter.
  • Try to reproduce a bug with default settings and without plugins.
You can use one of these possibilities:
    1) Use a portable version, install it to a new folder, e.g. "FreeCommanderTest" (your custom setting files will be preserved).

I just installed FreeCommander XE 2020 Build 810a 32-bit public. Problem solved.

The odd opening sequence in 860 may not be caused by the FreeCommander program but more how our computer parses the code. At any rate, 810a works perfectly. Both panes are displayed at the same time.

Thanks for the help, guys!

Hi Dreamer,

I installed FreeCommander XE 2020 Build 810a 32-bit public. Any version later than that causes problems with odd sequence pane opening.

The FCXE Portable version is the only one I use. Version 828 (64 bit and 32 bit) are the latest versions that work correctly.

I have the display problem with Version 845 (64 bit and 32 bit) portable. I have not installed later 32 bit versions yet.

The latest 64 bit version I have installed is 854 and that also shows the problem.

Could you download the version 860, please? Just for testing with default settings, unpack it to a new folder, e.g. FreeCommanderTest. Let us know, if you have the same problem with default settings. Of course, the other version with your custom settings will be preserved.

Can you send me your config files?
You can create the zip file with your settings with Tools->Backup all settings.

I downloaded version 860 64 bit portable and unpacked it into a new folder.

I used the default settings, but added:
1 tree per panel on the left
selected detail view (with a few column width adjustments)

The result is that on program start, the Detail view panes are displayed instantly,
but the Tree view panes are displayed after about a 1 second delay.

I am running a desktop computer with Windows 10 release 21H2
Motherboard: ASRock z170 Extreme7+ (Intel LGA 1151) with Intel HD onboard Graphics 530
CPU: Intel Quad Core i7-6700K 64 bit Processor
Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) SDRAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Earlier today I installed the 32 bit portable version 854 to see if that any effect.
The result was the same: Detail view panes instantly, Tree view panes after 1 second delay.

Version 828 (both 32 bit and 64 bit) starts with all panels displayed at the same time.

What is the real problem with a 1 second delay ?
How often do you start-up a file manager.
Windows 11 Home x64 Version 23H2 (OS Build 22631.3296)
Everything Version 1.5.0.1371a (x64), Everything Toolbar 1.3.2, Listary Pro 6.3.0.67

Hi Marek and other guys. Sorry for the delay. We were away yesterday.

I'm now running XE 2022 Build 860 32-bit public (the one with the delayed panes) and XE 2020 Build 810a 32-bit public. When I installed 810a, I created a folder on my D drive. My OS is installed on my C drive. I configured 810a the way I wanted it and when I opened it, there was no delay in displaying of the left and right panes. I saved its Settings but the folder to which I saved the settings was on the C drive inside the 860 version. I did this in error but now both versions open with both panes in sync.

So, unless I delete my 860 version and reinstall it for comparison, sending the .ini file would be of no use. It does prove however, that something is amiss with 860, at least on my computer. Others have reported the same.

Now I have both versions installed and they look the same and operate like my 790 version that was outdated in some ways. Should I just delete 810a so that 860 works as 790 did or is 860 now missing some of the newest updates?

I love this program because you can customize the daylights out of it, so unlike MS Explorer, which is so full of bloatware. I find configuring FreeCommander and understanding its structure a bit confusing but that's just me :P. The program is fantastic. I'm so grateful to the developer(s)!

horst.epp:

In comparison to the older versions, the 1 second delay appears to be an error in programming.
The display should present itself smoothly.

I start FreeCommander several times a day, to answer your question.
