Hello,
...at least that's what "Sort: Extension" button offers, whereas "Sort: Name", "Sort: Size", "Sort: Date/Time" do not.
I typically won't get to sort chronologically through this latter button by pressing a second time and thus I'm required to get to column header (sometime far right beyond panel size) to reverse sort.

For me all sort buttons shown in the toolbar function correctly.
Pressing twice - order is reversed.
Try to remove all sortings buttons from the toolbar, save settings, assign the buttons again.
