I was wondering, with the donor version, should I be able to view Word documents with the viewer.

Type Internet/Office

All file types listed in this edit field are opened as internet/Office files. Internet Explorer with its installed add-ons (MS Office, PDF, etc.) serves as the viewer plugin.

It does seem to be a general problem with my Surface Go. I'm having the same issue with Widows File Explorer.
Also, on my desktop, everything works fine. Thanks.
