830 32-bit Public Beta bloats Splitter icons [FIXED]

#1 Post by Forez » 15.10.2020, 22:04

After updating from version XE 810a 32-bit Public to 830 32-bit Public Bet all of my various icons on the Splitter are bloated: they are enlarged and with visible pixels; but they still occupy the same space [as I still see them in the same positions as before]. And If I install on top of it the old 810a version- the icons return to normal; and then I install the new one and the icons are messed etc.

I clicked with the right mouse button on the Splitter to see if there is some new "large icons" option in the 830- but I did not see such

I am running on Windows 10 Enterprise x64 18362.535

That animated GIF shows the difference between 810a 32-bit Public and 830 32-bit Public Beta

Image
[Sorry for the size but that is 100% - and I want to show the details]

And it seems that not only the icons on the Splitter are affected- there is a number of changes. I even loose some content at the bottom bar. And when I go back to the earlier version everything goes back to normal

I think know now what the problem is

After installing version 840 32-bit Public Beta also icons on my Favorite Toolbars went bloated. And that is because the newer versions of FC apparently are checking the value set by the user at

Settings > System > Display > Scale and layouts

In my case it is 150% - and bringing it down do 100% resizes the icons down to normal appearance [after re-opening of FC]

But I simply cannot because of one piece of software start running my Windows 10 in 3440 x 1440 resolution in the 100% mode. Because I am not an ant

After a much thinking and analyzing, following tweaking with Display section of the Ease Of Access of Windows 10, checking different configurations in Winaero Tweaker and Settings of FreeCommander, checking for comparison GUI in various pieces of software, consulting in similar regard on a forum for another piece of software- I have come to a conclusion:

this is not a bug

And what is more - it is the other way around:

it is the previous versions of FreeCommander that had a bug in this regard

Because it is only now that FC is working in compliance with Windows 10 options

And I also know just why would I make such a mistake. Because:

A] Default icons available for some of the options / features by FreeCommander were apparently designed [drawn] in time where 4K / big screens were a s-f stuff. [There is this website with free vector drawn icons: https://www.iconsdb.com/ - the main source for e.g. my Splliter icons. And if I am not mistaken, then a couple of years ago there was no option to download them in a size as big as 512 x 512.] And so in result today, when the user is using a vertical resolution above 1080 and on a screen with vertical physical size of over ~30 cm plus the Windows 10 is set to to display itself above 100%, the those icons provided by FreeCommander look a little pixelated. [Or I am having some other bug that makes them pixelated]

B] Because of this other bug http://freecommander.com/forum/viewtopi ... 19&t=10112 half of my high resolution icons from outside sources look blurred - which is an illusion because of that white contour around them

And that is it

The only thing that could be done here is to let the user choose if the icons are to follow the Ease Of Access settings - with the default setting set to YES. And this is doable, because previous FC versions were "set" to NO

Although

With my current settings the icons on the Splitter can be made small by right clicking on the Splitter and [de]selecting

Define actions toolbars... > Options > Use big icons

So what is the problem now?

Well apparently this way the icons get scaled down after first being scaled up. As a result the now small icons also look pixelated

And when I go back and forth between selecting and deselecting this "Use big icons" option and in the meantime click Apply, I get for something like a second a normal high resolution view of all of the icons on the Splitter. With "Use big icons" OFF there are [for a second] miniature but with "Use big icons" ON there are [for a second] normal. And by normal I mean a size of icons that I see on my Taskbar of Windows

So something is wrong after all. There is some bug

In version 861 32-bit public that bug is gone

But it seems that it got somehow transformed into leaving wider Splitter with icons [when they are switched off from Use big icons] retaining vertical spacing proper for larger icons. And that spacing cannot be reduced by re-setting of value >>0<< for

Define actions toolbars... > Options > Button spacing
