I don't see a reason to set VLC player in the Mutimedia if you don't have VLC installed.
For me all works fine with SLister, mmedia plugin and ULister together.
Of course none of them has Mutimedia it the detect string and ULister is on the lowest level.
I can also play any format with mmedia plugin disabled
while in Mutimedia tab the player is set to Windows Media Player 9.
This comes from my K-Lite Standard Codec Pack I think.
The problems left are known now by Marek.
I will now stop further discussing this topic.

Yes, I was already a VLC user.
So now FC uses the VLC-based interface, which IMO has many more controls as compared to the default interface.

Thanks for your inputs and guidance!

For anyone interested, here's what I use for pdf/epub:

Programs > External Viewers
Filter: *.pdf;*.xps;*.djvu;*.cbr;*cbz;*.chm;*.epub;*.mobi;*.txt
Program: C:\Users\milnak\AppData\Local\SumatraPDF\SumatraPDF.exe
Parameters: -esc-to-exit -presentation -view "book view" -reuse-instance "%ActivItem%" %AcceptOnlyFiles%

adjust "Program" path accordingly.
Now hit Shift-F3 to view a file in sumatra.

EPUB records can likewise be opened on a PC with a few free projects, like Caliber, Adobe Digital Editions, Apple Books, EPUB File Reader, Stanza Desktop, Okular, and Sumatra PDF. Notwithstanding a couple of the projects recently referenced, Mac clients can peruse EPUB records with Readium. You can also utilize https://mypcfile.com/converter/epub
