Cant choose the extension when creating a new file
Cant choose the extension when creating a new file
This a problem introduced by the new XE version. The "New File" dialog box automatically appends .txt to the file name, which is ok most of time but not always. Actually, programmers create a lot of text files with other extensions than "txt"
Re: Cant choose the extension when creating a new file
You are talking about the "New text file" (Shift+Ctrl+N) button? There is no "New item" button as it was in FC 2009. I think it should be added. Until then, use the right click menu.
Re: Cant choose the extension when creating a new file
Yes, I am talking about the new text file action. The explorer right click menu let me override the .txt extension with whatever I want. XE appends the .txt extension automatically.
What would be the simplest way to create, say, a .ini text file in XE ?

Re: Cant choose the extension when creating a new file
I'm using SHIFT-F4 to create a file with any extension I like.raytaller wrote:What would be the simplest way to create, say, a .ini text file in XE ?
But it will start Notepad++ and open the file for edit.
Re: Cant choose the extension when creating a new file
Wow I didn't know that !
Thanks for sharing.
Still, a "New file" without an automatic extension would be great (or simply being able to edit the extension when creating a .txt file)

Re: Cant choose the extension when creating a new file
I bump this because it's really annoying not being able to change the extension...
Why not prefill the "New file" textbox with "|.extension", with the carret at the beginning ? Then if I choose "New text file", the textbox displays ".txt", I type "blah + enter", it creates blah.txt, but I still have to option to edit the extension.

Re: Cant choose the extension when creating a new file
In release 564 I can define my own extension in "New text file" dialog Shift+Ctrl+N.
Re: Cant choose the extension when creating a new file
Ow, indeed. But Right click > New > [Any file] will still force append the extension.
Re: Cant choose the extension when creating a new file
It's right, this method makes test.csv.txt when typing test.csv.
