Synchronization Error/Mismatch

#1 Post by PollieXmas » 03.07.2008, 14:58

I have detected a problem with free commander during synchronization.

The error occurs when after a "compare" you de-select the two (green) left-to-right arrows in order to determine which files on the destination needs to be deleted.

I then select the all the files in the right hand pane by "shift-clicking" and delete the files by pressing F6. When the files are deleted I select the green arrows again and then select "Synchronize...".

The operation completes but seems to create a directory on the destination with the same name of the file in the topmost position in the left pane. It then proceeds to copy all the files in the left pane into that directory on the destination drive.

On completion it performs an automatic compare showing the files in the left pane still unmatched on the right and with the newly created directory on the right with the files unmatched on the left. For example,

1) Files a, b, c on left unmatched on right
2) Synchronize then copies files a, b, c to to a/a, a/b, a/c.
3) Resulting in files a, b, c on left unmatched on right and files a/a, a/b, a/c on right unmatched on left.

Subsequent synchronizations thus cause and error as file "a" cannot be copied to the destination because "a" is now a folder on the destination.

This only happens when un-selecting the left pane files in order to be able to delete the files on the destination which is no longer required, i.e. not available/needed on the source drive. This does not seem to happen when there is only a pane full of files to delete/synchronize. I've only noticed after having to delete 200+ files from the destination before re-selecting the green arrows and performing the synchronization.

The workaround is to force another manual compare after the files on the destination have been deleted to avoid the mismatch from happening.

My source is a USB HDD and my destination is a Linkstation NAS. I connect wirelessly to the router to which the Linkstation is attached. but this error also happens when I connect the Linkstation directly to my notebook's LAN port.

This error has been in all the versions of FreeCommander that I've been using over the years. It just took me a looong time to determine what is
happening and what the cause is. I currently use FreeComander Portable 2007.10a.

I hope you find this helpful.

Regards
Paul

Ps. Thank you for a very useful utility!

I have also had the problem of all files being copied into a directory which takes the name of the first file to be copied, and deduced that deleting files with F6 was somehow related. I haven't had it happen in recent versions, but then I generally will do a recompare after manually deleting anything.

I can confirm that this error is still present in 2008.6 (Portable)
