Trying to highlight several files listed by right clicking

Trying to highlight several files listed by right clicking while holding down the shift key. The problem is that after I right click on the first file name a menu appears (Open, Pin to Start, etc) that blocks the rest of the list. Is there a way to get this menu to appear to the right of the list rather than covering the list?

Are you using NC-Mode?
If not, why using the right mouse button for this instead of the left one?
Some more details, I might not fully understand the issue?
