Problem with PDF files

#1 Post by Oylefeu » 06.03.2014, 09:43

I am new to the Forum, and this issue may have been discussed/resolved already.
Whenever I pass over a pdf file with my mouse, it immediately opens, without clicking on it. This is inconvenient, if you just want to change the name of the file - since you have to first close the file (and the PDF Reader) before you can do so.
Any explanations why this is happening ?
I have tried using various PDF Readers (Foxit, Nitro, Acrobat) and it happens with all of them.
My version of Freecommander is XE 0.0.0.621

Thanks for a response

I've never heard of this one, but first thing you have to do is to get the newest FC XE version.

Problem with PDF files

#3 Post by Oylefeu » 06.03.2014, 14:44

Thanks for your response. I've installed the new version (650) - BTW - I wish Freecommander would alert me to new versions... and it makes no differnce. The pdf files still open as soon as my pointer is on the file name, without my clicking. Very strange.
Maybe someone else has observed the same phenomenon.

Do you experience the same problem in Explorer?

First, we have to make sure that this issue comes from FC.
So, please, download and unzip (outside the Program Files directory) the portable version: http://www.freecommander.com/FreeComman ... rtable.zip
Launch it (don't worry, it will not modify your system or registry in any way) and don't change any settings in the program itself; just browse to a folder with .pdf files and see if the issue persists.

P.S. are you using Windows 8, by any chance?

Thanks. have followed your instructions. It is still doing the same thing. To change the name of a pdf file I have to (obviously) highlight it, ie: a mouse click is involved - the file should not open, but it does. This does not happen for example when I change the name of a Word or Excel file. To change the name of a Word file I can either right click, which opens the context menu with all the commands such as rename etc., or I left-click and then press F2 to get the menu to change the file name. Right- and left-clicking on a pdf file immediately makes the file open in the reader.

In this case, the problem is definitely not caused by FC. You are the only one who can troubleshoot this one because only you know what other apps you have installed (some security suite bug, maybe an adobe acrobat plugin issue, mouse's own software gone mad, hotkeys/mouse gestures app misbehaving, etc.).

Thanks for this update. Difficult to clean up then. The previous version of FC did not have this behaviour, so I would Have to find out what other software I installed before I installed the XE version or after...I don't use Acrobat Reader any more, but some dll files or plug-ins may still be on the system. Maybe someone else will have the same experience and find a solution. I suppose I'll have to live with this inconvenience

Problem with PDF files

#11 Post by Oylefeu » 22.03.2014, 17:36

Hello again,

after a bit of tinkering with the settings, it now seems to be resolved.

I changed the Select Items/select with Mouse pointer/Hover time for select items [msc] to 2000 and ticked hot track only (even though I have no idea what that is for...) and it seems to work.
Thanks again for your help

I had the same/similar problem with just clicking on a pdf. It would always open. I use Foxit. My fix was to goto

Settings
View
(quick)Viewer
as Media

and remove any pdf entries in that list of file types. My problem stopped but I can't preview pdf files. No loss.

Thanks for that tip - because the solution I posted in my previous message in fact did not work !

I removed the .pdf reference in the viewer configuration settings, but I had to remove it from the Internet/Office tab, there was no reference to .pdf under media or images.
It seems to work for now, so thanks again.

FYI, I had the same problem, with an added twist. When I selected a PDF file in FC XE by single-clicking on it with a mouse, Foxit would begin running in the background and would not display the PDF. Since it did not display, I only realized there was a problem when I tried to rename the PDF and Windows balked, stating that the file was locked by another process. I ran Process Hacker and found that Foxit was running as a service, as near as I could figure.

Removing ".pdf" from the "as Internet/Office" file type list in the Viewer configuration, as Oyle did, corrected the problem. This only seems to be a problem with PDF files. I'm running Win7 SP1, FreeCommander XE 650, Foxit Reader 6.2.0.429. I ran FC XE Portable as joby_toss suggested and did not have this problem. Since I've eliminated the behavior, I'll stick with 650 and wait for the next stable release.
