Opening FreeCommanderXE from Windows context menu.

#1 Post by Sicknero » 08.10.2012, 23:17

Apologies first of all, because I'm certain that this query must have been dealt with before. I've spent an hour or so reading the threads though and honestly can't find it except in the normal FreeCommander threads, which doesn't help me.

Basically, when I add FreeCommanderXE to the context menu of a drive or folder (in Windows 7, x86 desktop and x64 laptop ... same issue with both), it opens up no problem but never in the directory that I want it to. For example, if I right-click C:\Program Files (in Windows 7 Explorer) and select FreeCommanderXE, it won't open directly in C:\Program Files but in the drive root or my desktop, depending on what prefs I've set.

FreeCommander2009 opened the selected location, and still does.

I've tried all the preferences and settings I can think of, I've also tried adding "/L" etc to the relevant registry entry, but nothing seems to help. It also makes no difference whether I use the portable version or install it.

I'm sure I'm probably just being dense, not only in being unable to fix this myself but also in being unable to find an answer in your forum, so apologies if I'm asking a silly question. Please help if you can, this is really my only dissatisfaction with this truly excellent program.

How do you do that? I don't see FCXE as an option in the context menu in Win7-64.

Aha :-) Thanks Karol for the link, I'd already read that but hadn't managed to make it work with FreecommanderXE.

However, with fresh eyes this morning I realised that I'd been editing the wrong key. I just edited the registry key in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and it now works perfectly. Haven't tried it in x64 yet but I think I'm on the right path.

I'm still learning my way around the Registry, I've only just learnt this morning that an edit in CLASSES_ROOT will also appear elsewhere, e.g. in LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFWARE\CLASSES. Clearly I have a lot to learn! Thanks very much for your reply.

@Scott_Y, you can use something like Winbubbles to add FcXE to the context menu of drives/folders/My Computer (which will also help you to add an icon), or do it manually, and then edit the relevant entries to make it work using the link that Karol posted.
